{"id":6,"date":"2010-07-09T18:49:49","date_gmt":"2010-07-09T18:49:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/native-studies\/native-studies-home-native-studies-departmentsprograms-faculty-of-arts\/"},"modified":"2014-09-24T13:59:48","modified_gmt":"2014-09-24T18:59:48","slug":"home","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/native-studies\/","title":{"rendered":"Native Studies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In 1975, Brandon University was the first university in western Canada (and only the second in Canada) to establish a Native Studies Department.<\/p>\n<p>The goals of the Department include:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The scholarly recognition of Native cultures and Native peoples of North America, bringing to bear the full academic resources of study and research representing all disciplines;<\/li>\n<li>The communication of the results of this research and expected new perspectives to students and others through university instruction and scholarly communication; and<\/li>\n<li>The dissemination of the teaching and research resources the university off-campus for the benefit of Native peoples, especially in northern and remote areas.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The Department of Native Studies offers both general courses in Native Studies and comprehensive programs of study in six areas, each identified as integral streams for students completing 3- or 4-Year degrees.
