Queer History Colloquium to be held at BU

BRANDON, MB – The Gender & Women’s Studies Program at Brandon University cordially invites the public and the press to attend the Queer History Colloquium on Wednesday, November 4, 2009. The event will be held in room 212 of Clark Hall. Four invited guests will speak on topics related to lesbian and gay history.

At 6:00 p.m., Dr. Greta Rensenbrink will give a paper entitled, “Magic, science and virgin birth in lesbian feminist communities in the 1970s and 1980s.” Dr. Rensenbrink is an Assistant Professor of History at Marshall University, West Virginia, with expertise in modern U.S. social, cultural and intellectual history.

At 6:45 p.m., Dr. Kat Williams will present, “We’re not lesbians. We’re ball players.” Dr. Williams is an Associate Professor of History and Director of Women’s Studies at Marshall University, West Virginia. Her specialties include U.S. women’s history and the history of sport.

Dr. David Churchill will give a talk at 7:45 p.m. entitled, “Sexual modernities and the bent historian.” Dr. Churchill is an Associate Professor of History and Director of the Institute for the Humanities at the University of Manitoba. He specializes in U.S. history post-1945, queer history and radical culture in the 1960s.

The final talk of the evening will be presented at 8:30 p.m. by Dr. Victor Macías-González: “ Racing the forty-one maricones: Narratives of race in Mexico’s gay history.” Dr. Macías-González is an Associate Professor of History at the University of Wisconsin. His areas of expertise include Hispanic cultural studies with a focus on gender, sexuality and class.

A wine and cheese reception will follow the final speaker.

This event is part of a larger speakers’ series that showcases the work of people who are advancing today’s frontiers of women’s equality, gender issues and social justice.
