Stanley Knowles Visiting Professor To Give Another Lecture In Series

This article is over 13 years old.

BRANDON, MB – Dr. Paul Shore, the fall 2010 Stanley Knowles Distinguished Visiting Professor, will give a lecture on November 15 at Brandon University. The focus of this talk will be “Competing Virtues: The Right, The Wrong and The Possible in the Jesuit Missions of Canada”.

According to Dr. Shore, “any time we consider the actors in a historical event, we must also take into account their understanding of right and wrong.” His work not only delves into what falls in each of these categories, but also “the underlying worldview of historical figures” which might greatly differ from contemporary takes on what is right and wrong.

As well, he writes: “This lecture will look at what we know about two very different ethical worldviews and what we might learn from each.”

Among the several universities where Dr. Shore has held teaching and research posts are Saint Louis University, Harvard Divinity School, the University of Edinburgh and Charles University Prague. His publications include The Eagle and the Cross: Jesuits in Baroque Prague; The Myth of the University, Rest Lightly: A collection of Latin and Greek tomb inscriptions, among others.

This free lecture is open to the public as well as the university community, and it will be held at 7 p.m., on November 15, in the Louis Riel Room, on the Brandon University campus.
