BRANDON, MB – After playing four games on the road, the Bobcats men’s and women’s volleyball teams are happy to be playing at home this weekend. Both Bobcats teams are hosting the University of Calgary Dinos in their 2010-2011 home-opener on Friday, November 19. The women hit the court at 6 p.m., and the men follow at 8 p.m. Game times for Saturday are also at 6 and 8 p.m.
The #5-ranked Bobcats are coming home from a successful road trip where they beat the University of Alberta Pandas 3-1(25-20, 16-25, 25-17, 25-19) last Saturday. They will look to continue that success at home against the Dinos, a perennial national championship contender. In fact, the Dinos appeared in nine straight CIS national championships from 2000-2009. After losses to Winnipeg and Saskatchewan, the Dinos are hungry as they look to return to the national contender picture.
Hoping to stand in their way are the Bobcats, who will be looking to sweep the home-opening series behind solid play from fifth-year starters Teagan Hunter, Becky Young and Sara Grona. Young sits in second place in the Canada West conference for assists (10.33 per set). First-year German import Donata Huebert leads the conference in digs (4.40 per set). The Bobcats currently sit with a record of 3-1. The Dinos come to Brandon with a 2-2 record.
Reigning Canada West Coach of the Year, Russ Paddock’s squad will be looking to turn the tides this weekend. They sit at 2-2 after sweeping the season-opening series against Saskatchewan, and then dropping two in a row to the #1-ranked Alberta Golden Bears in Edmonton last weekend. The Bobcats will have a challenge on their hands as they host the reigning National Champion Dinos. The University of Calgary team sits with a perfect 4-0 record after wins over Winnipeg and Saskatchewan.
Fans can expect a lot of offense in this match-up as both teams have a ton of fire-power, and hit the ball effectively. Bobcat and Dino athletes hold the top four spots in hitting percentage in the Canada West conference. Bobcat Jonathan Sloane leads the conference in hitting percentage (.559), while Paul Sanderson sits in second (.429). Dinos Allen Meek and Graham Vigrass sit in third and fourth respectively with percentages of .403 and .394.
