Speaker Addresses Issues Facing Seniors

BRANDON, MB — The Gender Frontiers Speakers’ Series, a showcase of people advancing today’s frontiers of women’s equality, gender issues and social justice, continues with a guest speaker from St. Thomas University. Dr. Deborah van den Hoonaard, the author of several books including The Widowed Self, will address two specific issues related to older adults during her visit to Brandon University.

On Monday, March 7, at 7 p.m., her talk will focus on “Different Lives: Gendered Experiences of Widowhood Among Older Women and Men”. This talk will address the loss of a life partner in later years and the many changes that ensue — from relationships with friends and children to everyday life. This will take place in Rowe Theatre, in the Education Building on campus.

The following day, coinciding with International Women’s Day, Dr. van den Hoonaard will talk about “Older Women and Body Image”, in Theatre B, in the Brodie Building. This event will run from 1:40 to 3:30 p.m. Though body image is usually associated with younger women, this presentation will touch upon ageism, the quest for never-ending youth, and the effects of consumerism on body image in older women.

Both presentations are free and open to the public.
