Cuba is the Underlying Theme of Upcoming Performance

BRANDON, MB — The director and singers of the Brandon University Chorale invite faculty, staff, students and the general public to their upcoming performance. Their goal is to share the ensemble’s Cuban experience in music and pictures. On March 25, the BU Chorale, directed by Dr. Andrée Dagenais, will perform their last concert of the year, which will include new repertoire learned during their recent trip to Cuba.

In February during reading week, the BU Chorale undertook its third international tour. The singers shared performances and workshops with high calibre choirs in Havana. The BU Chorale had the unique opportunity of upgrading their skills — primarily rhythm — become familiar with different performance traditions, learn new repertoire and hear professional choirs — some of Cuba’s 18 professional choral ensembles. The Caribbean nation, with its 11 million inhabitants has a rich, multi-faceted culture, including influences from Africa, the Caribbean and Asia.

Also under the baton of Dr. Dagenais, in the early 2000s, the BU Chorale had successfully represented the province in the CBC Choral Competition and the National Music Festival winning the City of Lincoln Trophy two years in a row. In addition, the ensemble toured regionally and nationally. A year ago, BU Chorale was selected to perform for the 2010 Olympic Torch Relay. The Chorale’s previous international tour brought the group to France in 2007 to complete a choral exchange with l’ Ensemble vocal from l’Université de Poitiers. At that time, the ensemble toured in Tours, Poitiers and Paris.

Friday evening’s performance will be held at 8 p.m. at St. Matthews’ Cathedral. There will be an admission fee at the door.
