BRANDON, MB — One of the volunteer gardeners on the Brandon University Beautification Committee, Barbara-Jean (B.J.) Jackson was lauded for some of her entries at the recent Can-West Iris Society Show in Winnipeg. Retired from her position as an office assistant in the School of Health Studies since 2010, she has continued to work in the BU gardens, primarily with the iris beds located in front of historic Clark Hall.
Jackson returned with top honours earlier this month from the fifth annual competition that focused on irises. For her efforts, she received the American Iris Society Silver Medal and Certificate for most first-place stems in the show as well as the award for Best Stem in Show for the miniature tall bearded iris named ‘Ace’. Further, Jackson also garnered the Can-West Iris Society Award for the Best Historic Iris in Show and the OnRussell Cup with Tall Bearded Iris ‘Ranger’, which was registered in 1943. These winning stems were grown and cut from the Brandon University gardens, which she helps to maintain.
The irises that Jackson nurtures can be seen in the gardens facing 18th Street. Everyone is welcome on campus to admire the blooms.
