BRANDON, MB – Four Brandon University educators are nominated for this year’s 28th Annual YWCA Women of Distinction Awards to be announced at the gala ceremony occurring this evening in Brandon. Dr. Kathryn Hyndman, Dr. Lorraine Mayer, Kathleen Nichol and Julia Senchuk have been recognized for their outstanding contributions to post-secondary education under the “Excellence in Education” category.
Dr. Kathryn Hyndman joined the Faculty of Health Studies at Brandon University in 2004, and is currently Associate Professor of Nursing. She teaches courses focusing on research methods, evidence-based practice, professional nursing practice, leadership and management, and quality nursing practice environments.
“I consider the nomination from my colleagues to be a sincere honour,” says Hyndman. “Education has been a lifelong value in my life and in my family, and it is such an important concept as a key determinant of health. With a good education, people can lead healthier and happier lives.”
Dr. Lorraine Mayer is a Professor and faculty member in the Department of Native Studies at Brandon University, and is editor of The Canadian Journal of Native Studies. Her research interests include Native women and feminism, Native American philosophy, Aboriginal sovereignty, and identity.
“It is a great honor to be nominated for such a prestigious Brandon YWCA award,” says Dr. Mayer. “I would like to thank the Manitoba Métis Federation, Southwest office and Leah LaPlante in particular for believing in me and what I represent.”
As Instructional Associate at Brandon University in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, Kathleen Nichol teaches foundational level courses in math, physics and chemistry. She has over 30 years of service to the University, and is a long-time member of the BU Status of Women Review Committee.
“I love teaching,” says Nichol, “I derive tremendous satisfaction from making math and science knowledge understandable and seeing students move forward into fulfilling studies and occupations.”
Julia Senchuk is a Sessio
nal Instructor at Brandon University in the Faculty of Science. She operates her own private counselling practice in Brandon focusing on individual, family and couple counselling, and is very involved as a volunteer with the St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog Program.
“It is such a privilege to be nominated alongside these amazing women,” says Senchuk. “We all lead such busy lives, and it is an honour for women to be recognized for what they contribute and give back to the community.”
The Women of Distinction Awards Gala has been held since 1985 to honour women of Brandon and the Westman and Parkland areas. This prestigious award recognizes women’s individual accomplishments, women who are inspirational role models and women who have made significant contributions to the community.
