Putting People First in Rural Areas

July 6, 2015

Throughout rural areas in Ireland, 2014 legislation requires local governments to team up with economic and social development agencies. The steering committee of this new Local Community Development Committee is dominated by citizens and some elected officials. It is a new model of civil society governance. Together they coordinate, plan, and oversee local spending among local business, agriculture, artists, social agencies and many others, guided by a 5 year plan, help coordinate action projects, community celebrations of achievements, and training through ad hoc groups reach into stakeholders across the region. Many are volunteers who link action for development of the rural economy by improving quality of life, while distributing project funding linked to national strategies of diversification, business creations, encouragement of tourism, and environmental conservation.
