Brandon University (BU) is mourning the loss of Len Evans, a member of BU’s Board of Governors and a former Department of Economics faculty member.
Evans, who served Manitoba and the Brandon East constituency for 30 years as a Member of the Legislative Assembly, passed away on Saturday at the age of 86.
“Len was a great contributor to Brandon University and the community,” said BU Board of Governors Chair Derrick Stewart. “He was a champion of post-secondary education in the city, and a genuine and caring man who always had the best interests of others at heart. Len will be missed by all those who knew him.”
Evans taught at BU before being elected to the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba in 1969. Upon his retirement in 1999, he remained active in the community as a volunteer. The Canadian flag in front of Clark Hall will be flown at half-mast in his honour.
“Len’s optimism and dedication to public service are inspirational,” said BU President Gervan Fearon. “On behalf of Brandon University, I would like to pass on my condolences to Len’s family and all those whose lives he has touched.”
At the request of Evans’ family, a scholarship is being set up at BU in his memory. If friends so desire, donations are being gratefully accepted for the Len Evans Scholarship Fund at Brandon University. Cheques should be made payable to “Brandon University Foundation” and can be sent to: Brandon University Foundation, 270–18th St., Brandon MB, R7A 6A9.
