BRANDON, Man. — One of the highlights of past pro series—the faculty concert—returns on Tuesday with an unparalleled programme for music lovers in Brandon. Highlighting the proficiency of several of the talented musicians in the Brandon University School of Music, the line-up is made up of compositions ranging from the early 20th century to newly composed works.
“The performers in this concert are outstanding in the Canadian music world. We are fortunate to have them on faculty—not only teaching our students, but also sharing their talent with the greater community of Brandon,” said Acting Dean of Music, Greg Gatien. “Some of them will present timeless favourites, while others will introduce new works. So, this popular annual event promises once again to be entertaining as well as enlightening.”
Several small ensemble pieces are slated for the evening. These include the performance of The River Merchant’s Wife: A Letter by former Brandon University faculty member, Dr. Kenneth Nichols, featuring soprano Sarah Hall, flutist Nancy Hennen and pianist Alla Turbanova, as well as Menotti’s Hello, Hello? Oh Margaret, it’s you! with soprano Naomi Forman and pianist Mary Jo Carrabré, and an interpretation of In the History of Man by Ben Wahland, putting Victoria Sparks and Eric Platz in the spotlight.
Additionally, in this edition of the faculty concert will be trombonist Dr. Aaron Wilson playing an arrangement of Gershwin’s Three Preludes, Dr. Cathy Wood with a work for piccolo clarinet entitled Registro de Pajarillo by Jorge Montilla, and guitarist Paul Madryga with pieces by Andrew York. Jazz saxophonist Wayne de Silva, the newest member of the faculty, and ’cellist, Dr. Leanne Zacharias will also participate in the showcase.
“This annual showcase of our internationally renowned faculty offers Brandon audience members a chance to hear high calibre performances by those who make up the School of Music,” Gatien said. “It is with great pride that I invite you to attend this memorable evening to hear my distinguished colleagues.”
The 2016 pro series faculty concert will take place Tuesday, March 8, at 8 p.m., in the Lorne Watson Recital Hall, located in the Queen Elizabeth II Music Building, at Brandon University. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors, students and BU alumni, and $10 for Conservatory students, and will be available at the door or in advance at the School of Music main office.
The next pro series recital presents bass and contrabass clarinetist Lori Freedman, on Tuesday, March 29, at 8 p.m., also in the Lorne Watson Recital Hall.
On Monday, May 16, 2016, the pro series presents violinist James Ehnes. Tickets for this recital in the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium are specially priced at $25 for adults, $20 for students, seniors and alumni, and $15 for Conservatory students. These tickets are not included in the pro series subscriptions and must be purchased through the WMCA box office.
