BRANDON – Brandon University (BU) will mark International Women’s Day by recognizing 15 outstanding female students.

The students were nominated by BU faculty and staff for their accomplishments and contributions academically and in the community. They will be honoured during a reception on Thursday, March 8 at the Gathering Space of the John E. Robbins Library, beginning at 4:30 p.m. Profiles of the students can be read online at BrandonU.ca/Womens-Week.

“It’s very inspiring to see such a talented, intelligent and diverse collection of students at BU,” said Dr. Cathryn Smith, who is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Education and the chair of BU’s Status of Women Review Committee.

“These women show tremendous leadership on campus and in our community. It’s even more encouraging to know that they are only a small sample of the incredible women who contribute a great deal to Brandon University every day.”

Each of BU’s five faculties is represented among the 15 students. Six different Manitoba communities are the hometown for at least one student, while the list also includes women originally from Jamaica, Costa Rica and Greece. Some of the students came to BU straight out of high school, while others have returned to complete their education after being away from school for several years.
