Workshops help Indigenous men develop wellness “survival skills”

BRANDON – In partnership with Brandon University (BU) researchers, the Brandon Friendship Centre (BFC) and Brandon Urban Aboriginal People’s Council (BUAPC) are hosting a new series of wellness workshops for Indigenous men.

The workshops will take place at the Cultural Resource Centre (A.R. McDiarmid Civic Complex, 638 Princess Avenue) every Thursday from March 7th to March 28th at 6 p.m. The free weekly gatherings will offer Indigenous men traditional teachings, an opportunity to share their stories with other Indigenous men, and wellness “survival skills.” Light snacks and childcare will be available to men attending.

The workshops will help the BU researchers look at ways to improve Indigenous men’s wellness. The research team, which includes Rachel Herron, Jonathan Allan and Candice Waddell of BU, along with Kerstin Roger of the University of Manitoba, intends to use information collected from the workshops to improve policy and programs to better address Indigenous men’s wellness.

The project is part of a larger study aiming to reach a diverse group of participants and expand current understandings of men’s mental wellness in the region. The research team is looking for men across the Westman region to participate in small group discussions or share their story one-on-one.

Anyone interested in the workshops or the research project can contact Herron, who is the project lead and BU’s Canada Research Chair in Rural and Remote Mental Health at HerronR@BrandonU.ca or sign up at the Brandon Friendship Centre.
