Free public talks at the Brandon Public Library continue to bring Brandon University research to the community.
The inaugural season of talks kicked off in the fall, with a series of well-received presentations on museums and rural tourism, university impact and community relations, music composition, and loneliness.
“These events have been extremely well attended so far, with great conversation stemming from each of the presentations,” said Louise Ferguson, the Programming and Outreach Librarian at Western Manitoba Regional Library. “People seem to have really embraced the concept and the library is thrilled to host the talks. We look forward to continuing this partnership with the university.”
“It’s a thrill to bring BU’s ongoing research off campus and into the community, and the Brandon Public Library have been incredible partners,” said Rick Baker, an Assistant Professor of Political Science at BU and one of the organizers of the speaker series. “So much of the research being done here is sparked by local concerns and local issues, and the audiences so far have really reflected that.”
The talks are arranged monthly through the academic year, and are held on Thursday evenings, starting at 7 p.m. Each is supported by a downtown restaurant, which provides light refreshments for attendees. The talks take place in the program room at the Brandon Public Library, inside the Town Centre.
Coming over the next few months are:
- Thursday, January 16 — “How a Digital Storytelling Project is Changing Minds about the Problem of Autism in Schools,” by Patty Douglas, from Education. Refreshments by Benny’s Restaurant.
- Thursday, February 13 — “An Odyssey: Families’ Experiences Living with Acquired Brain Injury,” by Jane Karpa, from Psychiatric Nursing. Refreshments by Sabor Latino.
- Thursday, March 19 — “People Living and Working Together: Jane Jacobs on City Planning and Ethics,” by Dr. Steve Robinson, from BU, and Elisabeth Saftiuk, from the Brandon Downtown Development Corporation. Refreshments by Komfort Kitchen.
