The entire Brandon University community is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of one of its most decorated members.
The Honourable Ron Bell was BU’s Chancellor Emeritus, having served as Chancellor from 1990 to 1996. Originally from Deloraine, he was a Brandon College graduate in 1951. He received the Alumni Award for exceptional service in 2000, was inducted into the BU Alumni Association Wall of Fame in 2002, and received an honorary degree from Brandon University in 2006.
A prominent lawyer with a specialty in taxation, Bell was appointed Judge of the Tax Court of Canada in 1991. He brought his extensive legal, professional and personal experience to his service on many BU boards, and tirelessly promoted BU across the country, while also making significant financial contributions to improve physical structures, programs and student scholarships. A founding member of the BU Foundation, he established both the R.D. Bell Scholarship and the R.D. Bell String Scholarship. In 1999, he received the Foundation’s Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser Award. The R.D. Bell Hall at the BU Queen Elizabeth II Music Building was named in his honour, as was the Bell Tower atop the original Brandon College building, now part of Clark Hall.
A memorial service will be held Friday, Jan. 24 at 1 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Home in Winnipeg (1442 Main St.). Brandon University is lowering its flag to half-mast in Bell’s honour.
