BRANDON, Man. – The Brandon Bobcats are semi-final bound after booking their ticket to the next round with a 3-1 (25-20, 22-25, 25-19, 25-21) win over the Calgary Dinos Friday night at the Brandon University Healthy Living Centre.
The Bobcats' dynamic duo of
Elliott Viles and
Robin Baghdady at outside combined for 38 kills on the night, but it was fifth-year middle
Mason Metcalf who stole the show with some unlikely and impressive digs to go with his nine kills and three blocks.
"It was definitely one for the books," said Metcalf. "For us to come out and finish the sweep feels good. We had a tough second semester so for us to capitalize on tonight was good."
"We definitely are playing our best volleyball right now and we going to keep improving each and every week. Canada West is a grind, but all that matters is that you play your best volleyball by the time playoffs come around and I think we're on that track."
Brandon was in control of the first set from beginning to end, hitting at an .500 efficiency in the first set.
Calgary answered with an early 8-4 lead in the second set at which point the Bobcats battled back with four straight points to tie it. It wasn't enough however, as Calgary hit at a higher efficiency for the first time all weekend.
Third set was closely contested until fifth-year middle Metcalf went on a serving run late in the set before making a spectacular dig to set up set point.
The Dinos were led by Hamish Hazelden's team-high 17 kills while Mac McNicol finished with 13. Hazelden also had a team-high in digs with eight, while Tomas Sorra put up 41 assists.
Viles led all scorers with 21 kills on the night while Baghdady had a double-double (17 kills, 11 digs).
With the loss the Dinos season is over, while Brandon will travel to Langley to play the Trinity Western Spartans in a rematch of last year's national U SPORTS national final.
