The Brandon University community is saddened by the passing of Shirley Douglas, a veteran stage, film and television actress who was a lifelong activist and a BU honorary degree recipient in 2005.

Douglas, who was also the daughter of famed Brandon College alumnus Tommy Douglas, died early Sunday. Her son, actor Kiefer Sutherland, said she passed away from complications surrounding pneumonia that were not related to Covid-19.

“Among Shirley Douglas’ many wonderful roles, it was a privilege to have also had her on the roll as recipient of a Brandon University honorary degree,” said BU President Dr. David Docherty. “Ours was just one on the long list of awards and recognition she earned, and she truly carried on her family legacy of working fearlessly and passionately to improve our world.”
