Brandon University launches search for next Chancellor

This article is over 3 years old.

Following two successful terms under Chancellor Michael Decter, Brandon University is looking for the next person to step into the role as titular head of the University.

“Michael Decter has exemplified the very best of Chancellorship, and on behalf of the entire Brandon University community, I extend to him my deepest thanks for his service to our institution,” said BU President David Docherty. “Michael brought dignity and gravitas to the ceremonial aspects of his role, and thoroughly engaged to all his duties with thoughtful care. He has been a delight to work with, and we all look forward to continuing a warm relationship with him.”

Decter, a native Manitoban and recipient of the Order of Canada, is a Harvard-educated financier, senior public-sector manager and national expert in health systems who previously served on the Brandon University Foundation and as Chair of the Stanley Knowles Distinguished Professorship Endowment Campaign in the 1980s.

Decter was first appointed BU’s Chancellor in 2013, then re-appointed to a second term in 2017. The Brandon University Act limits Chancellors to two terms.

The Chancellor serves as the formal head of Brandon University, and they are chosen for their ability to provide high-level vision, guidance and wisdom. They are a member of both the university’s governing bodies, the Board of Governors and the Senate, and they preside over each Convocation, where they bring greetings and advice to the graduating students as well as officially conferring the degrees. The Chancellor also serves as a general ambassador for the university, supporting and promoting BU’s mission and values.

Nominations for a new Chancellor are being accepted through the BU Senate, at BrandonU.ca/Senate-Office/Chancellor-Search. The university hopes to install a new Chancellor in the spring.
