Grants available for community projects through Gender & Women’s Studies

This article is over 3 years old.

The Gender & Women’s Studies program at Brandon University (BU) is accepting proposals from community-based organizations for grants through the Margaret Laurence Endowment Fund.

Up to two grants of up to $5,000 each are available to help fund projects by non-profit community organizations. Past proposals have included workshops and events, guest speakers, research, short-term programming, or other special projects. Projects that aim to reduce any form of intersectional oppression will be considered, including discrimination related to age, sexuality, race, gender identity, ability and poverty.

The opportunities for applicants are wide-open.

“We know that many community groups have tight budgets, so these grants are flexible by design to help organizations access the funding in a way that best suits their needs,” says Dr. Corinne Mason, Associate Professor of Gender & Women’s Studies at BU.

“Through the Margaret Laurence Endowment Fund we are able to foster links between our program and the community while helping important projects get off the ground.”

Last year, with many events impossible, funding from the Endowment was used to support efforts mitigating the effects of Covid-19 on those who have been particularly hard-hit by the pandemic.

Organizations may also apply for funding to hire student help. The placement of a Gender & Women’s Studies student is beneficial for both the organization and the student by allowing the student to share their knowledge and initiative while gaining valuable experience and learning outside the classroom.

“Our students are very passionate about feminist and gender justice, and they see how everyone benefits from these values,” Dr. Mason says. “Some of them have gotten summer employment through projects supported by the Endowment Fund, and they find it very rewarding to partner with organizations to bring positive social change to the Westman region.”

Applications are due April 1, 2021 for projects that run between May 1, 2021 and March 30, 2022. Application forms can be found online at BrandonU.ca/gender-women-studies/gws-news.
