Brandon University emphasizing value of experiential learning in March

Brandon University is putting a spotlight on work-integrated and experiential learning this month, highlighting programs like Co-operative Education that help students augment their skills and deepen their learning.

“We are expanding work-integrated learning opportunities at BU because it works so well,” said BU President David Docherty. “Through Co-op, students engage with employers throughout our region and even across Canada — earning a paycheque, building their networks, and bringing their experiences back to the classroom to support future studies.”

In Canada, March is recognized as National Co-op & Work-Integrated Learning Month, helping promote the innovative successes of work-integrated learning. This culminates on Wednesday, March 24 for the National Day of WIL.

“Students are always enthusiastic to gain relevant experience and to cement the value of their in-classroom learning,” said Cora Dupuis, BU’s Co-operative Program Coordinator. “What is really gratifying is to hear how valuable is for employers as well. Nearly 90 percent of our employers rank our co-op students’ job performance as great or excellent.”

Recent expansions to BU Co-op mean that nearly every student at Brandon University now has the opportunity to make work-integrated learning a part of their studies. The BU Co-op program covers every degree in Science and also has the most comprehensive list of Arts majors in the province. Experiential and work-integrated learning is already built into BU’s other faculties, through nursing practica, student teaching placements, and music performance requirements.

Along with showcasing BU’s growing Co-op program through March, the University will be profiling research, business, and student successes.

“I wish we could share every story because our students have such amazing experiences, ” Dupuis said. “Students return to the classroom energized and better equipped for their next year of school. For those that are graduating, many have job offers from happy Co-op employers.”

A key highlight of the month will be BU’s sponsorship of the next Chamber speaker series event, on Thursday, March 18, at which BU has helped arrange for Brien Convery to speak. Convery, an RBC executive who is a dynamic and high-energy speaker, will speak on the future of work, and how to transform that future through talent, people, culture, and inclusion. At the event, BU President Docherty will also make a significant related announcement.
