Student research in spotlight at Senior Colloquium

This article is over 2 years old.

Fifteen upper-years students will present their research as the Senior Colloquium returns to Brandon University (BU) on Monday, April 12.

The Colloquium was cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic but will take place online this year, with live presentations to be streamed from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The students will cover a wide array of topics, including history, environmental science, religion, music, health care and astronomy.

While the scope of projects is global and beyond, many of the students focused on Manitoba for their work.

“One thing that stands out to me is how the program sheds light on community-engaged research to better understand Brandon and the local area, both scientifically and socially,” said Dr. Dominique Hetu, an Assistant Professor in BU’s Department of Classical and Modern Languages.

“This shows quite clearly an intentional and meaningful relationship between university and community.”

Dr. Hetu is a member of the Colloquium organizing committee, along with Dr. James Naylor (Department of History) and Dr. Emma Varley (Department of Anthropology).

The committee has sorted the presentations into five themed sessions:

  • 9 to 10 a.m. — Oppositional Politics and Culture
  • 10 to 11 a.m. — Brandon through the Archives
  • 11 to 11:45 a.m. — Science to Frontlines: Micro to Macro
  • 1 to 2 p.m. — How the Land Works: Case Studies in Manitoba
  • 2 to 3:30 p.m. — Taking Care: Community, Health Inequities, and Lived Experience.

Previously open to third- and fourth-year undergraduate Arts and Science students, this year’s Colloquium was opened up to students from all faculties, including graduate students.

“The Colloquium is a great opportunity for students to develop their presentation skills while sharing their research with their family, fellow students, and other members of the BU community,” said Dr. Naylor. “A tremendous amount of work has gone into this research, and it’s extremely valuable for students to develop and refine their communication skills so they can share what they’ve learned.”
