BU Food Services looks local with new coffee, tea, and meat partnerships

This article is over 2 years old.

Cold-steeped hibiscus tea is one of the new local flavours on offer.

Food and beverages at Brandon University now have even more local flavor, with BU Food Services launching two new partnerships, drawing on longstanding local experience as well as a newcomer to the scene.

Anyone looking for a caffeinated campus pick-me-up will now be able to enjoy a cup of H Coffee, provided by the west-end café. Alongside coffee, Food Services will also feature some of their other beverage products on campus, like their 13-hour ice-brewed hibiscus peach tea, which launched this week. In return, BU will provide H Coffee with pastries and other baked goods for their customers.

And, in BU’s new BBQ and Burger menu, the offerings feature in-house smoked meats and locally sourced burgers, using meat from downtown mainstay Obermaier’s.

Food Services also continues to provide sushi options from Kim’s in Brandon multiple times per week.

“These local partnerships are a win-win for everyone,” said BU Food Services Manager Nicholas Namespetra. “We’re able to provide some of the best that Brandon offers to folks here at BU, and we’re able to find new outlets for the great pastries and BU Fresh takeaway meals we’re so proud of here.”

New burgers at BU include local meats.

Food Services has been creatively responding to the changes and impacts of the ongoing pandemic, which have hit the entire restaurant and dining industry hard. While the start of the new academic year, with additional in-person classes being held safely on campus, means that more people are buying meals, much of the traditional dining hall space in Harvest Hall has been converted temporarily to student study space.

Like other restaurants, most patrons of Food Services must prove their vaccination status in order to dine in. Students living in BU Residence are exempt under provincial health order, as are those who are taking meals out.

Food Services continues to offer a wide variety of delicious, satisfying, and healthy meals. They serve daily favourites, options from cuisines around the world, fresh new menu items, plus always tons of variety that’s different from week to week. In honour of the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, this week’s meals are inspired by Indigenous traditions and recipes.
