Dr. Christopher Schneider of Brandon University’s Department of Sociology will receive a Distinguished Alumni Award from Harper College in Illinois.

Dr. Schneider, a Professor in BU’s Department of Sociology and a highly sought-after media commentator, will receive a Distinguished Alumni Award from Harper College later this month. Harper College is based in the Chicago suburb of Palatine, Ill., and is one of the United States’ largest community colleges, with an annual enrolment of more than 35,000 students.

“Harper is where I was introduced to sociology, so to be recognized for my career accomplishments as a professional sociologist is especially meaningful,” Dr. Schneider said. “It’s humbling to be chosen for such a distinction.”

Dr. Schneider has done extensive research on technology and its integration into police work, and is the author of Policing and Social Media: Social Control in an Era of New Media. He has been called on to provide analysis of those topics and more by major media outlets across North America, including the New York Times, the Washington Post, USA Today and the CBC.

“Dr. Schneider provides keen insight on issues that are both very timely and very important to today’s society,” said Dr. Kofi Campbell, Provost and Vice-President (Academic) at BU. “His research, his promotion of Brandon University, and his volunteer work are commendable, and I am delighted to see that Harper College holds him in the same high regard that we do.”

Dr. Schneider will be recognized at Harper College’s Distinguished Alumni Awards Event on Tuesday, Oct. 26. For more on his Harper College connection, and his career academic journey since then, visit HarperCollege.edu/DistinguishedAlumni.
