One of Brandon’s largest marches and rallies started at Brandon University on Saturday, March 5, with an estimated 400 people showing their support for Ukraine with flags, signs, and emotional speeches.
Starting at the Brandon University campus, marchers proceeded down 18th Street and Victoria Avenue to Brandon City Hall, with the crowds of people closing two lines of traffic and stretching for multiple blocks.
Led by a massive blue-and-yellow Ukrainian flag, marchers shouted Ukrainian slogans and waved signs while drivers honked their support.
At City Hall, Brandon University’s President was among those who spoke to the assembled crowd. Saying that the University was proud to stand up for truth and democracy, David Docherty said that BU would be ready to house refugees in residence and would sponsor Ukrainian students.
Other speeches told of the dire need for medical and humanitarian support, while also pushing politicians for additional military aid. Due to the costs, delays, and complexities of shipping, financial donations are preferred. Here are some ways you can help locally.

How to help:
Financial donations are preferred, as volunteers can use the support purchase the most urgently needed items not only in Canada, but from any other country in the world.
While donations through the Red Cross or other NGOs are appreciated, they may not be able to help immediately.
Donations are also being accepted through the Sts. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral, which is able to provide a tax receipt for your donation. They accept e-transfers to email@example.com and ask for Ukraine as the password, with “Support Ukraine” in the memo field.
To donate by cheque, please make it payable to “St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church” and specify “Ukraine” in the memo. Mail or deliver to St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, c/o Fr. Y. Strukhlyak, at 927 Assiniboine Ave., Brandon, MB, R7A 0G7.
