Brandon University hosting events for National Indigenous Peoples Day

This article is over 1 year old.

Brandon University is encouraging everyone to participate in National Indigenous Peoples Day to celebrate and honour Indigenous peoples and cultures, to learn about Indigenous history, and to engage meaningfully with Indigeneity today.

National Indigenous Peoples Day is Tuesday, June 21 this year, and BU is participating in or hosting a number of events around that time to support the day.

Most of the city’s celebrations are hosted at the Riverbank Discovery Centre, where BU is a sponsor and will have several booths. The BU presence will include a Beading Babes display and information about the Indigenous Student Transition Program. Brandon University has also donated one of its tipis to the tipi village that will be erected, and BU President David Docherty will bring greetings at noon on Tuesday.

Brandon University’s other two tipis will be set up on the front lawn of Clark Hall for a week, starting Friday, June 17th. Other activities are also planned for campus, including a BU Teaching House honouring the change of seasons at summer solstice, and a guest speaker on Indigenous Education & Residential Schools. Both of these take place Monday, June 20.

Construction is also ongoing on a newly expanded ceremonial firepit on campus. Although delayed by weather, it’s hoped that the new firepit, which will feature large stones for seating and natural grasses and sage plantings, will be completed by National Indigenous Peoples Day. From above, the firepit has been designed to resemble a turtle.

For those wanting to look their best at National Indigenous Peoples Day, the BU Bookstore has new T-shirts in stock with the BU Indigenous Peoples Centre logo.
