Seven decades of peace research, cross-border collaboration, and student–faculty camaraderie continue today at Brandon University as the Canadian institution hosts Minot State University for the 70th annual Peace Garden conference.
The conference is hosted annually at the International Peace Garden, an international park that straddles the Canada–United States border between Manitoba and North Dakota. Hosting duties alternate between BU and Minot State.
“The Peace Garden Conference brings together students and faculty with similar interests to share knowledge, socialize, and in our small way to support collegial cross-border relations,” said Dr. Allison McCulloch, chair of BU’s Political Science Department. “It is a reminder that peace is a process, which requires ongoing efforts to sustain.”
Today’s conference consists of student essay presentations in the morning and thematic roundtable discussions in the afternoon.
Student presentations feature The Legalization of Cannabis: The Dangers of Executive Federalism and the War on Drugs by Renee Ferguson; Gender and International Development: Feminism in Service of Neoliberalism by Alison Hore; Divide and Conquer: Canada’s Juxtaposing Imposition of the Asian Model Minority Myth and Criminalization of Indigenous Peoples by Janis Kim; and Justin Trudeau’s ‘Reconciliatory Federalism’: A Nation-to-Nation Partnership Under Critical Evaluation by Liam Nohr.
Following lunch, afternoon discussions will explore Growing Political Polarization in North America; Court-politics Dynamics; and The War in Ukraine.
