Brandon-Souris Member of Parliament Larry Maguire got a first-hand look at the high-quality work being done by Brandon University (BU) Department of Geology students on Wednesday.

Maguire paid a visit to two labs: a third-year Sedimentary Petrology lab and a first-year Historical Geology lab.

“The geology area is not just fossil fuels. There are so many more opportunities,” said Maguire, who is a former Vice-Chair of the Standing Committee on Natural Resources. “We have a lot of opportunities for critical minerals in Canada from coast-to-coast. We need to have people here in Canada who understand that field, and it’s going to take great students to tackle that.”

With strong faculty and student research programs, BU provides opportunities for students to gain hands-on experience with national and international projects, even at the undergraduate level. In the Department of Geology, students learn from experienced instructors with extensive experience in the field, in top-notch lab facilities.

“It’s a great time to study geology,” said Dr. Simon Pattison, Professor and Chair in the Department of Geology. “Historically, we see strong enrollment in the program at times of high demand for natural mineral resources. Right now, we’re seeing huge demand for critical minerals, and this is only growing as we develop clean, green and renewable energy technology and communications networks. This is creating tremendous career opportunities for our students after graduation.”
