The Grand Valley Local-Manitoba Métis Federation and Brandon University (BU) are proud to host a fun family celebration for Louis Riel Day.

The afternoon celebration will include free hot dogs, bannock, and coffee or tea, along with kids’ activities. Make sure to take in the entertainment, with the D-Town Steppers square dancing, and live music by Nite Life.

“Louis Riel Day is always a wonderful time, for the whole family, and we’re so happy to be back,” said Yolanda Gurr, chair of the Grand Valley Local, a not-for-profit organization under the Manitoba Métis Federation.  The celebration has been curtailed the last couple of years due to pandemic-era restrictions. “What’s best has been how enthusiastic the response has been, including from donors and sponsors. “Join us in creating memories filled with education, fun and laughter.”

The celebration is in a new location this year — the Knowles-Douglas Students’ Union Centre, which faces 18th Street just south of Clark Hall. The best entrance is from the BU courtyard. There is free parking campus-wide, in all lots.

Many events will be in the Mingling Area, with kids’ activities upstairs and beading available in the BU Indigenous Peoples’ Centre.

“It’s an honour to host a major community celebration like Louis Riel Day on campus here at BU, and of course it’s also a lot of fun,” said BU President David Docherty.

“There’s an unmatched energy in Louis Riel Day that’s completely infectious and I am so glad it’s back to being held in person.”

There are no classes scheduled at BU during Louis Riel Day, which is a provincial holiday, and everyone is encouraged to attend.
