It is not the same as \u201cfeeling blue\u201d or \u201cbeing in a bad mood\u201d. Depression can vary from mild to severe, affecting one\u2019s ability to cope with daily activities and relationships. Depression is a complex issue that can be caused by various factors.\u00a0If left un-checked, the feelings can worsen.<\/p>\n<h2>Changes in feelings and\/or behaviors:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Reduced ability to find pleasure in anything, including sex.<\/li>\n<li>Feelings of hopelessness and\/or worthlessness; suicidal thoughts<\/li>\n<li>Exaggerated sense of guilt or self-blame<\/li>\n<li>Loss of warm feelings toward family and friends<\/li>\n<li>Neglect of responsibility and appearance<\/li>\n<li>Irritability, confusion, indecisiveness<\/li>\n<li>Reduced ability to cope on a daily basis<\/li>\n<li>Thoughts of suicide<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Please note: if these symptoms are severe or an ongoing concern, consult your doctor or nurse practitioner.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Physical complaints:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Chronic fatigue and lack of energy<\/li>\n<li>Significant change in appetite (decrease or increase)<\/li>\n<li>Change in sleep (excessive sleeping or trouble with sleep)<\/li>\n<li>Unexplained headaches, body aches, pain<\/li>\n<li>Digestive problems, including stomach pain, nausea, indigestion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Some causes of depression:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Stress<\/li>\n<li>Difficult or traumatic events; chronic stress<\/li>\n<li>Substance use\/abuse<\/li>\n<li>Medical issues, sleep or nutrition issues<\/li>\n<li>Genetic predisposition<\/li>\n<li>Brain chemistry<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What you can do:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Talk about it, learning that you are not alone<\/li>\n<li>Consult with your health care professional<\/li>\n<li>Remind yourself that healing takes time<\/li>\n<li>Develop a wellness plan (you can do this with your counselor)\n<ul>\n<li>Physical self care (exercise; nutrition; sleep; reduce alcohol, drugs, caffeine)<\/li>\n<li>Lifestyle habits (routines, goals; stress reduction; relaxation)<\/li>\n<li>Emotional self-care (feel your feelings; self-forgiveness; professional help)<\/li>\n<li>Social support (friends, family; colleagues)<\/li>\n<li>Spiritual connection (prayer; meditation; community; find purpose\/meaning)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Sources:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Counselling Services at Brandon University<\/em><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.counselingcenter.uiuc.edu\"><em>Counseling Center at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign<\/em><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Need Additional Help?
