It may impact one&#8217;s ability to go to class, work, maintain relationships , coping skills, and quality of life.<\/p>\n<h2>Examples of traumatic events can include:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Emotional, physical and\/or sexual abuse or neglect<\/li>\n<li>Physical attacks or assaults<\/li>\n<li>Car accident<\/li>\n<li>Torture, war combat<\/li>\n<li>Natural disasters &#8211; hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes and fires<\/li>\n<li>Witnessing or hearing about something horrible that has happened to another person<\/li>\n<li>Death of a loved one<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Symptoms can look like this:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Irritability or outbursts of anger<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty concentrating<\/li>\n<li>Hyper-vigilance or overprotective behavior<\/li>\n<li>Exaggerated fight, flight, or freeze response<\/li>\n<li>Shock, fear, confusion, and\/or helplessness<\/li>\n<li>Anxiety and\/or depression<\/li>\n<li>Change of appetite and\/or sleep patterns<\/li>\n<li>Avoidance of people, places, situations<\/li>\n<li>Susceptible to illnesses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What you can do?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Talk about it<\/li>\n<li>Know you are not alone<\/li>\n<li>Remind yourself that healing takes time<\/li>\n<li>Educate yourself on Trauma (i.e.: self help groups, books, internet)<\/li>\n<li>Develop a wellness plan (you can do this with your counsellor):<\/li>\n<li>Physical self-care (exercise, nutrition, sleep)\n<ul>\n<li>Lifestyle habits (Routines, goals, stress reduction, relaxation)<\/li>\n<li>Emotional self-care (feel your feelings, self-forgiveness, seeing a counsellor)<\/li>\n<li>Social Support (friends, family, colleagues)<\/li>\n<li>Spiritual connection (prayer, meditation, community, finding purpose\/meaning)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Sources:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Counselling Services at Brandon University<\/em><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.counselingcenter.uiuc.edu\"><em>Counseling Center at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign<\/em><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Need Additional Help?
