{"id":168,"date":"2021-01-13T22:48:30","date_gmt":"2021-01-13T22:48:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/webtest.brandonu.ca\/physical-plant\/?page_id=168"},"modified":"2021-03-05T09:52:42","modified_gmt":"2021-03-05T15:52:42","slug":"winter-tips","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/physical-plant\/groundskeeping\/winter-tips\/","title":{"rendered":"Winter Tips"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With our harsh prairie winters one needs to be prepared for all types of situations and weather conditions that can change or happen at a moments notice.\u00a0\u00a0When the weather dips below -20C, it is an important time to remember to stay safe in the cold weather outside.\u00a0 Here are 6\u00a0\u00a0winter tips on proper preparation for cold weather this winter:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Pay Attention to the Weather Forecast<\/strong> &#8211;\u00a0 Before you go outside, check the weather forecast.\u00a0 Be aware of wind chill warnings, as this can make the air feel significantly colder.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Plan Ahead<\/strong> &#8211; Make sure you have plans for cold weather safety set in advance.\u00a0 Make sure to have a safety measure in place as in an emergency winter kit in your car.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dress Appropriately<\/strong> &#8211; Make sure to dress in layers, including wind resistant outer layers.\u00a0 Hats, mitts and water proof boots are also important, especially during prolongs periods of time outdoors.\u00a0 Be sure to have as little exposure to exposed skin on high wind chill days.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Keep Moving<\/strong> &#8211; Movement generates body heat, therefore physically movement will keep you warm when outside on cold days.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Find Shelter<\/strong> &#8211;\u00a0 Especially with high wind chills, it is important to find shelter.\u00a0 If walking, bus shelters are a great place to stop and warm up slightly before continuing on your journey.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Know the Warning Sign<\/strong> &#8211; There is a much higher risk for hypothermia and frostbite on extremely cold days.\u00a0 Hypothermia results from a drastic drop in body temperature, and causes shivering, confusion and loss of muscular control\u00a0 It can lead to cardiac arrest.\u00a0 Frostbite is a condition where fat, muscle and bones become frozen, which can lead to extremely serious tissue damage and amputation.\u00a0 Please seek medical attention immediately if you believe you are suffering from either of these conditions.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Stay Safe.
