This report offers important insights <\/span>for stakeholders involved in business <\/span>development. This research establishes <\/span>that entrepreneurs starting a business <\/span>are advantaged by also planning and <\/span>organizing for their enterprise\u2019s growth <\/span>over the long term. This study shows that <\/span>business advisors and coaches need to <\/span>inform their clients of the importance of <\/span>ongoing risk assessments both prior to and <\/span>after launching a business. It also suggests <\/span>that governments need to have employment <\/span>and industry sector data updated regularly <\/span>to aid entrepreneurs in their business <\/span>planning and operations. <\/span><\/p>\n

This report presents the findings of Rural <\/span>Development Institute\u2019s research project <\/span>focused on the Aurora Business Leadership <\/span>Program (ABLP) \u2013 a business development <\/span>tool delivered to immigrants in the Brandon <\/span>area. This report identifies the success <\/span>rates of start-up businesses in Canada and <\/span>concepts of successful business start-ups. <\/span>These findings establish benchmarks <\/span>for measuring the success and growth of <\/span>enterprises owned or operated by Canadians <\/span>and immigrants. Both dimensions of success <\/span>may help inform government agencies, <\/span>chambers of commerce and policy analysts <\/span>as well as investors and business advisors <\/span>helping start-ups, and entrepreneurs <\/span>themselves in their planning for business <\/span>development in rural regions.<\/span>This research involved two literature <\/span>scans conducted in 2019. <\/span><\/p>\n

The first scan <\/span>identified a number of Statistics Canada <\/span>studies, which applied differing criteria <\/span>of SME success, including SME survival, <\/span>positive employment growth, contribution <\/span>to exports, and contribution to GDP. Two <\/span>references were particularly relevant for <\/span>this project. Ostrovsky and Picot (2018) <\/span>compared survival rates for Canadian- <\/span>and immigrant-owned SMEs from 2003 <\/span>to 2009. The rates started similarly at <\/span>~88% after year 1 but declined to 58% <\/span>for Canadian-born and 56% immigrant-<\/span>owned SMEs after seven years. <\/span><\/p>\n
