Jaelyn Eberle from the University of Colorado, and Natalia Rybczynski from the Canadian Museum of Nature, to identify the ancient jawbones.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1840\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 242px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/research\/files\/jawbone-242x158.jpg\" alt=\"Jawbone\" class=\"wp-image-1840 size-full\" height=\"158\" width=\"242\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The jawbone discovered by Dr. Greenwood. Eberle of the University of Colorado at Boulder.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe two species we have discovered are an ancient tapir relative that would have been about the size of a large dog, and a hedgehog relative that would have been smaller than a mouse,\u201d says Dr. Greenwood. \u201cThis is remarkable because very few fossil mammals of this geological age have been described before in Canada.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The fossil discoveries are also significant because the early Eocene epoch when these mammals lived marked the height of prehistoric global warming, a period involving significant reorganization of the world\u2019s plant and animal life.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe can gain insight into how the Earth was coping with a problem then that\u2019s re-emerging now.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWe can gain insight into how the Earth was coping with a problem then that\u2019s re-emerging now,\u201d says Dr. Greenwood, who used fossils to reconstruct the forest setting and climate where the ancient animals lived.
