With a career deeply rooted in biology and parasitology, Dr. Ardelli’s research has led to groundbreaking advancements in understanding drug resistance mechanisms in parasitic organisms and the environmental impact of microplastics on immune responses. Her dedication to advancing science has garnered her prestigious support, including funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Dr. Ardelli’s path to science was not a straight line. It was during her fourth year of undergraduate studies that her direction crystallized, thanks to the guidance of mentors like Dr. Cheryl Bartlett and Dr. David McCorquodale, who inspired her interest in biological sciences. Over the years, her research has uncovered insights into microplastics and their role in inflammatory immune responses, the discovery of new ABC transporter classes, and collaborative work with Kerry Bergen on GluCL in insects and parasitic worms, establishing Dr. Ardelli as a leading voice in parasitology and environmental biology.

Her entry into academic leadership came with a desire for institutional change. As Chair of the Biology Department, she noted recurring issues that dated back to her undergraduate experience and committed herself to fostering improvement in academic processes and support. She approaches leadership with a service-minded philosophy: “It’s not about me; it’s about the institution,” she reflects, emphasizing her goal to leave her office and university in a stronger state than she found them. Her contributions as Dean of Science saw her play a pivotal role in curriculum development, research initiatives, and faculty advancement.

An advocate for inclusivity, Dr. Ardelli has led initiatives like “Let’s Talk Science” and the “STEMinist Convention,” which empower young women and dispel stereotypes about who can succeed in STEM fields. One of her earliest “Let’s Talk Science” events challenged traditional notions of scientists, helping youth from diverse backgrounds imagine themselves in scientific careers. Her aspirations for STEM outreach focus on creating more diverse representation in both science and society.

Looking to the future, Dr. Ardelli aims to build a robust research portfolio at Brandon University, expand funding opportunities, and establish a university press. She is committed to increasing graduate programs, launching certificate courses, and providing greater support for international students to make academic pursuits at Brandon University more accessible and rewarding.

Dr. Ardelli’s work has earned her multiple awards, including the Brandon University Senate Award for Excellence in Research, reflecting her scientific achievements and dedication to fostering innovation. Outside her professional life, she shares her home with her son, Luca, and their Miniature Dachshund, Mr. Freckles Winston, enjoying time with family and balancing life’s demands with curiosity and community spirit. This balance of family, leadership, and research defines Dr. Ardelli’s career and legacy in higher education and science.

Dr. Bernadette Ardelli is a distinguished researcher and academic leader, currently serving as Vice-President for Research & Graduate Studies at Brandon University.
