{"id":846,"date":"2014-02-20T11:26:45","date_gmt":"2014-02-20T17:26:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/womens-week\/?page_id=846"},"modified":"2015-03-04T16:20:44","modified_gmt":"2015-03-04T22:20:44","slug":"karla-stouffer","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.brandonu.ca\/womens-week\/archive\/womens-week-2014\/karla-stouffer\/","title":{"rendered":"Karla Stouffer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>What education have you taken?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>I graduated from Crocus Plains Regional High School in Brandon, and completed a three year Bachelor of Science from BU in 2010 with a major in Zoology and minor in Geography.<\/p>\n<p><b>What accomplishments are you proud of?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>I am very proud to be raising two wonderful, intelligent daughters.\u00a0 And am proud to be earning my degree part-time while working to support a family.\u00a0 I was delighted to win the provincial bowling tournament and a trip to Newfoundland to compete in Nationals as a teenager.<\/p>\n<p><b>Tell me about yourself\/ background\/ history.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>I grew up in Brandon, playing softball in summer and five-pin bowling in the winter \u2013 most memorable because my Mom, Dad, little sister and I spent so many hours together as a family, on the ball diamonds and at the bowling lanes here in Brandon and throughout\u00a0 Manitoba.<br \/>\nAfter high school, I chose to have a family and later moved to British Columbia for a few years \u2013 then returned home and ran a licensed home daycare while my girls were in school.<br \/>\nOnce the kids got a little older, I started working towards a Science degree at BU.<\/p>\n<p><b>How did you become interested in your field of study?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>I have two vivid memories:\u00a0 trips to Grandma\u2019s house in Birtle \u2013 she lived along a river \u2013 watching and listening to the birds \u2013 and family camping trips every summer \u2013 we always went to the local museum or provincial park.<br \/>\nI enjoy being a volunteer bluebird-line monitor.\u00a0 I wanted to learn more.<\/p>\n<p><b>What is your philosophy in life?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>From my parents I learned to treat everyone with respect, play fair, and always do your best \u2026 and girls can do anything boys can do!<\/p>\n<p>To these I\u2019ve added my own philosophies:\u00a0 have fund, stay positive, appreciate what you have and see the good in everyone.<\/p>\n<p><b>Where do you see yourself in the future?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Now that the kids are grown, I am able to travel to do research.\u00a0 I would like to complete a four year honours degree in Chemistry or Geography and apply to Graduate School to study environmental chemistry and wildlife toxicology.\u00a0 Ultimately, I hope to teach at either high school or the university level.<\/p>\n<p><b>Nominator\u2019s Comments<\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Karla Stouffer is a an exceptional student, with\u00a0 amazing good humour. \u00a0\u00a0She has taken three courses from me and excelled in them all.\u00a0 She is a high achiever.\u00a0 Karla has an excellent great work ethic.\u00a0 She has always delivered excellent work.<\/p>\n<p>Karla has marked for me for a few years \u2013 she is a very good marker \u2013 detailed, knowledgeable, beautifully neat and prompt.\u00a0 She adds very helpful comments to each lab or assignment\u00a0 she marks, with several, appropriately placed, smiley faces!\u00a0 She has demonstrated one of my labs in Chemistry and handled it very well.\u00a0 I had no qualms about leaving her in charge of a group of first year university students and chemicals!\u00a0 She has an upbeat attitude that is infectious.<\/p>\n<p>As a single parent of two girls and as a teaching assistant, she is a great motivator.\u00a0 Karla always has a smile and upbeat attitude and good thoughts and words. She loves all things botanical and outdoors. \u00a0She is patient.\u00a0 Karla contributes quietly so much to her surroundings.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What education have you taken?
