<\/a>Hello, my name is Jacqueline Flett.\u00a0 I am an Ojibwe woman from Peguis First nation reserve.\u00a0 I am a proud parent of three daughter and four grandchildren.<\/p>\n

I am currently finishing my four year degree in Bachelor of Science.\u00a0 I will be graduating with two majors \u2013 Psychology and Native Studies \u2013 in May 2014.<\/p>\n

I graduated from Peguis Central School in 1990 with my grade 12 diploma.\u00a0 I became a single parent with two children after graduation.\u00a0 Being a single parent came with struggles.\u00a0 However, I still had my goals in my mind to further my education.\u00a0 Four years later I was accepted in the prep course for Aboriginal students at the Red River College.\u00a0 After graduating from Herzing I enrolled in the Business Information Systems program at Herzing Career college, and graduated with a diploma.\u00a0 I moved back home to Peguis First Nation.\u00a0 I worked for the Peguis School board, as a receptionist, for nine years.\u00a0 I was sitting at my desk one day and did not find my job challenging anymore.\u00a0 I wanted a career, and I wanted to give my children a better life.\u00a0 So I filled out my application and was accepted to the Bachelor of Science program which started in September 2008.<\/p>\n

I always knew I would further my education after high school graduation.\u00a0 I was not one to give up on my future goals.\u00a0 My father and mother were great role models in my life as I was growing up.\u00a0 My father was a hardworking man who worked all his life, eventually owning a business.\u00a0 My mother was a single parent to six children.\u00a0 She received her Masters in Education at the Brandon University.\u00a0 I saw her overcome many struggles to get her education and also raise her children at the same time.\u00a0 She is my inspiration and I wanted to give my children what she gave me.\u00a0 I thought if she can overcome everything she has been through in her life, so can I.<\/p>\n

My plans after graduation are to further my studies and enroll at the Minot University for the Communications Disorder 2 year program.\u00a0 After Minot, my long term goal is to take my masters in audiology in another province, or become a speech and language pathologist and work on my reserve.<\/p>\n

My philosophy in life is to be grateful for all what you have in your life.\u00a0 Life can be a struggle at times, but if you remain positive, your path and journey in life can become clearer and easier to go through. \u00a0Plan for your future and make some goals in life.\u00a0 It may take a while to reach your goals but never give up.<\/p>\n

I see many people on my reserve who are struggling to find out who they are and what their journey in life was supposed to be.\u00a0 For my situation, I can say that education has helped to heal my life.\u00a0 I grew up overnight, and my perspectives became clearer.\u00a0 What I would like to take out of this learning is to teach my own people back home.\u00a0 I would like for them to feel what I am feeling.\u00a0 It is amazing when you find yourself.\u00a0 I can relate to the people on my reserve and what they might be going through.\u00a0 I appreciate everything I had to go through in life to get where I am today.\u00a0 It made me the strong women I am today. I am proud to say my daughters now see me as their role model, and I would like to thank my mother for that also.\u00a0 Migwetch<\/p>\n

I would like to nominate a student who really stands out for me \u2013 Jacqueline Flett.\u00a0 She is completing her degree in psychology this year.\u00a0 In simple terms, Jackie is a mother and grandmother but also a dedicated and focused student.\u00a0 She is working toward completing her own degree while providing support to her own children and grandchildren.\u00a0 She is a great representative of the many women who are finding a way to successfully manage many aspects of their lives.\u00a0 We are lucky to have her as a representative of our program and our institution.<\/p>\n
