Job Title: Lab Technician
Organization Name: Western Asphalt Products
Reports To: Technical Director
Department: Materials Testing Laboratory
Job Purpose
Perform tests to evaluate the quality of all asphalts and aggregates to ensure that all materials supplied by Western Asphalt Products meet the highest market standards and its customer needs.
Core Responsibilities
  • Test asphalt emulsions and aggregates adhering strictly to the procedures outlined on ASTM, AASHTO, and Provincial Standards.
  • Conducts laboratory equipment troubleshooting, maintenance and calibration to ensure optimal analytical conditions following internal Standard Operational Procedures.
  • Efficiently schedule, prioritize and complete laboratory tasks in a safe manner.
  • Document all testing and trials completed by yourself or other lab staff according to the Laboratory Management Quality Plan.
  • Help maintain inventory and SDS database of all laboratory reagents and products.
  • Provide technical support for emulsion manufacturing and customers as required to the extent of your knowledge and experience acquired during in house training.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  • Identify maintenance required on laboratory equipment and physical structure.
  • Identify and request required laboratory supplies prior to depletion.
  • Learn and understand province or region-specific product testing requirements.
  • Inform production staff of test results and recommendations in a timely manner.
  • Qualification of new raw materials for use in existing and potential new products under Management supervision.
  • Ability to independently complete tasks and projects.
  • Willingness to travel to sample asphalt binders and aggregates as required (typically 1-4 days at a time)
  • Required to organize and store and catalogue aggregate, emulsion, asphalt and other raw materials or finished materials.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Technical Director.
  • Must wear all levels of PPE required.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
From March to October: typically 40-50, 60 hours per week as needed during peak production. Work hours are from 8 am to 4:30 pm, but it includes overtime on weekends, early morning or evenings and holidays as needed.  For the rest of the year typically 35 - 40 hours per week, from 8 am to 4:30 pm, with rare occurrences of overtime.
