The Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) is a national museum dedicated to the evolution, celebration and future of human rights. It is the first national museum in Canada to be built outside the National Capital Region. Located in the heart of Canada in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the CMHR rises from the Prairie earth at The Forks, which has been a meeting place for over six thousand years. The Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) is centered around the idea that respect and understanding of human rights can serve as a positive force for change in the world. The Web Developer will collaborate with others in the organization to support our collective efforts to build a workplace culture that is inclusive, equitable, innovative and focused on inspiring action.

Reporting to the Manager, Digital Platforms, the Web Developer is part of the digital team that develops and implements digital strategies aligned with corporate priorities and needs rooted in research and development, maintenance and support, and delivery of innovative software projects that encourage and support the engagement of diverse remote and in-gallery audiences. In addition to addressing functional and technical development, navigation, information architecture, style sheets, accessibility, and the publication of the web site’s presentation layer, the Web Developer ensures the web front end interacts with underlying web and IT systems (such as databases and content management systems).

The incumbent works within the emerging and rapidly changing media and technology fields and is required to continuously stay abreast of industry trends. The incumbent will be a strong and thoughtful communicator, critical thinker and innovator, and will bring a collaborative approach to their role.

Key Responsibilities:

• Contributes to a culture that promotes respect, equity, inclusion and innovation, and models antiracist and accountable behaviours.
• Works as part of a multi-disciplinary team of software developers, designers, and other staff to design, develop, code, test, and document new highly accessible digital media, web, and exhibit applications while maintaining a high level of client service and satisfaction.
• Provides web maintenance activities and services related to content, interface data entry and documentation.
• Develops engaging and inclusive digital experiences for in-gallery and remote audiences using innovative technology and digital storytelling techniques.
• Defines, leads, and participates in user, accessibility, and acceptance testing for Museum applications.
• Conducts requirements gathering through observation, analytical analysis, and stakeholder consultation.
• Serves as technical subject matter expert for technical support/software development related to website and mobile platforms and exhibitions (core and temporary/travelling).
• Coordinates work to meet project timelines
• Designs, manages and evolves user and business software needs across all platforms (web, mobile, CMS, etc.).
• Ensures new and legacy software development projects follow industry standards and best practices.
• Provides information and guidance on the use of web-related digital platforms and related technical matters when required.

Required Qualifications:

• Degree/Diploma in Computer Science, specific to web technologies with a minimum of 3 years of experience as a Web Developer or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Extensive knowledge and experience with full-stack web technologies (HTML5/CSS3, JavaScript, SASS, XML and web content management systems, specifically Drupal), WCAG 2.0 accessibility standards and guidelines, ARIA, Roles, Semantic web.
• Commitment to human rights principles, including respect, equity, inclusion and dignity for all, including anti-racism.
• Working knowledge of RESTful APIs.
• Ability to take initiative and establish prospects for innovative media and technology-based storytelling directed to both on site and remote audiences.
• Experience with web applications and protocols; and the ability to diagnose/troubleshoot related issues.
• Experience with version control and automated testing.
• Experience with evolving social media technologies (Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, etc.).
• Expert knowledge of and experience with evolving multimedia technologies (audio, video, animation, photography, digitization, webcasting, mobile apps, blogs, wikis, tactile presentation, etc.).
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Exceptional time management skills, with the ability to work under pressure, multi-task and prioritize.

Desired Qualifications:

• Ability to communicate with proficiency in both official languages.
• Experience with iOS and Android, or other open frameworks.
• Experience in the design and development of mixed-media environments and transmedia storytelling.
• Knowledge and experience with assistive technologies (JAWS, VoiceOver).
• Experience with network protocols TCP/IP, FTP and the ability to diagnose/troubleshoot connectivity issues.
• Experience working for or providing service to a museum, cultural institution, or similar entity.
• Knowledge of UI/UX process and terminology.
