MOTION

THAT the AFC By-Laws be amended to read as follows:

The Dean of Arts shall serve as Chairperson of the Department Chairperson Selection Committee. The Department Chairperson Selection Committee shall be comprised of department members (term, probationary, tenured) and the Dean of Arts.

The Dean of Arts shall notify department members of the expiration of the term of office of the incumbent Department Chairperson at least two weeks prior to the expiration of the Chair’s term. At that time nominations for Department Chairperson shall be requested from members of the department. Members of departments shall have not less than five (5) business days to submit nominations. The Dean of Arts is responsible for determining the willingness of nominees to allow their names to stand for election. Where there is one candidate, she/he shall be acclaimed to the position of Department Chairperson. Where there is more than one candidate, there shall be an election. Members of the department shall form the electorate. Members of the department shall be informed of the election in writing and electronically. Members of the department shall have not less than five (5) business days within which to submit their ballots. Ballots may be received in writing or electronically. Election shall be determined by a simple majority vote. In the case of a tie vote, then, and only then, the Dean of Arts shall vote.

Once the Chair is elected, the department shall meet and consider the term of office of the Chair. The Dean of Arts will be informed of the term of office as determined by the department. In no case may the term of office exceed three years.

These procedures are limited by Article 25 (Department Chairpersons), as it may be amended from time to time. In the case of a discrepancy between this policy and Article 25, Article 25 shall prevail.’
