If so, apply to join our team of Parliamentary Guides who…

  • Welcome visitors to the Parliamentary buildings and answer their questions;
  • Interpret Canada's political history and legislative process, the art and architecture of the Parliamentary buildings;
  • Adapt the content of the tour to the needs of groups which may include international visitors, dignitaries and school children.

As a Parliamentary Guide, you can hone your speaking abilities, perfect your second official language and form special friendships with people from coast to coast!

You work in both official languages and provide a number of valuable services by:

  • Greeting and welcoming visitors to Parliament, both inside and outside the buildings;
  • Interpreting Canada’s political history, its legislative process and the art and architecture of the Parliament buildings;
  • Adapting your tour content to suit the needs of various groups, including international visitors, dignitaries and school groups;
  • Assisting and serving Parliamentarians, parliamentary staff and the general public.

As a Parliamentary Guide you will…

  • Gain extensive knowledge of Canada’s political system, past and present, of Canada’s history and of the art and architecture of the Parliament buildings;
  • Improve your public speaking and presentation skills;
  • Practice and perfect your second official language;
  • Develop important interpersonal and team working skills;
  • Build your confidence and expand your creativity;
  • Become more adaptable as you gain experience working in time-pressured and quickly evolving situations;
  • Develop your critical thinking skills and your professionalism;
  • Improve your client service and communication skills.

Wages:

  • Guides are paid $21,64 per hour.
  • The Parliamentary Guide Program offers a living allowance of $1000 total to help cover expenses while in the National Capital Region (Ottawa-Gatineau) (dependant on performance and contract completion).

To apply, you must:

  • Be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident;
  • Be a student at a recognized university and provide a registrar’s seal (or equivalent, i.e. proof of payment, proof of status) as proof;
  • Be available for full-time employment from May – September 7th 2020;
  • Be able to communicate fluently in English and French.

    Applicants to the Parliamentary Guide Program will be assessed according to the following criteria:

    • Knowledge of the Canadian legislative process and the history of Parliament;
    • Superior oral communication and interpersonal skills;
    • Professionalism and judgment;
    • Creativity, adaptability, confidence and a capacity to engage;
    • Initiative, focus and team work.
    • Ability to converse clearly, coherently and accurately, and to convey and understand a message easily in their second language at a superior level, as assessed by the House of Commons Language Assessment Centre.
