Description
General description of the role of a Summer Recreation Coordinator & Counselor would be as follows: Responsible for the planning, participating and supervising of a wide range of activities for intellectually challenged Adults over the summer. There are also responsibilities to plan for trips throughout the rest of the year.
- Supervision
- Supervise participants and support activities in daily living.
- Delegate tasks to participants in a fair and equal manner.
- Provide ongoing feedback to management regarding performance on a formal and informal basis.
- Report to management participant related issues.
- Identify and promote to make improvements through interactive experiences.
- Promote, build and maintain a positive working environment.
- Maintain positive and effective communication.
- Identify and apply critical thinking and problem solving techniques.
- Utilize different communication styles and skills necessary, with individuals, families, supervisors, agencies, co workers and community at large.
- Ensure completion of necessary records and documentation in accordance with agency policies and procedures, Residential Care & Licensing and the Department of Family Services & Housing requirements. Monitor and respond to completion when and where required, of the following.
- Communication logs/daily logs.
- Progress reports.
- Financial Records.
- Medical Information.
- Incident reporting for protection, abuse or neglect.
- Behavioral observations
- Person Centered Plans.
- Program to program correspondence
- Safety
- Ensure that residence and staff participate in a safe environment.
- Respecting the environment while adhering to regulation standards, codes and policies.
- Participate and respond to.
- Client files
- Daily logs
- MAR Sheets
- Incident Reports
- Other documentation as requested.
- Ensure property and equipment is maintained and is in clean, safe working order.
- Report and attend to unsafe conditions
- Ensure compliance with fire safety regulations and participate in monthly fire drills.
- Ensure all individuals are familiar with the fire safety procedures and policies.
- Ensure safe storage of Medications when required.
- Ensure safe storage of Medication and First Aid supplies (ERIC packs) during outings.
- Locate information on in house drugs and side effects.
- Ensure adequate supervision in identified risk areas.
- Assess risk areas for individuals. (In conjunction with individuals support network)
- Provide supervision and support as required.
- Ensure accurate administration of medication.
- Ensure medication administration records are accurately completed.
- Document and report all medication errors.
- Ensure Nutritious meals and snacks in accordance with Canada’s Food Guide.
- Follow the Canada Food Guide and adapt to individual likes, preferences, choices and medical requirements, including for example, Pradar Willi, celiac, colostomy, allergies, diabetes, and cholesterol.
- Recognize and respond to concerns of abuse or neglect.
- Follow reporting process for concerns of abuse of neglect, following the direction of the Vulnerable Persons Act.
- In conjunction with support network respond to the impact of abuse and neglect on the individual.
- Be involved in the developing, implementing and monitoring of recreational program plans.
- Participate in the development of new services as needed.
- Participate in the use of formal and informal assessments as required.
- Assist management and staff in the planning process and follow through.
- Provide individuals with support in pre planning by providing a mechanism to gather information re: individual’s goals and desired outcomes.
- Communicate necessary information and maintain positive relationships with staff and participants from other agencies.
- Encourage and assist each individual to participate in the daily activities and responsibilities of their personal lives

- Provide accurate and complete information in order for individual to make informed choices.
- Provide emotional, spiritual life skills, sexuality and social support in a manner that respects and honors the individual’s privacy and dignity.
- Play an active role in providing opportunities for relationships with families, neighbors and the community.
- Build individual’s skills on how to maintain relationships. I.e. correspondence, phone calls, planning and coordinating social activities.
- Teach and assist individuals to develop positive social interactions.
- Assist individual’s skill level.
- Identify appropriate social settings then explore, create and monitor the opportunities for participants to play an active role in the community.
- Prepare individuals for social settings.
- Provide opportunities for individual to experience a variety of community options for social interaction.
- Teach appropriate skills for interaction.
- Provide informal mentoring and coaching.
- Provide repeated opportunities and options.
- Monitor individual expenditures to ensure that financial plans are being followed.
- Follow internal cash counting procedures.
- Regularly compare expenditures to set budgets.
- Ensure individuals are being assisted with the management of their personal funds for recreational and volunteer outings
- Work within the individuals financial limits, personal financial plan and bank account limits.
- Report mismanagement of funds.
- Ensure individuals plans are paid in a timely manner.
- Manage participant funds and ensure recording of purchases and completion of financial reports.
- Follow policy, procedures and guidelines regarding finances.
- Provide receipts for everything.
- Utilize agency recording system.
- Participate in meetings.
- Provide welcoming atmosphere.
- Encourage staff participation.
- Encourage and support implementation of team decisions.
- Provide resources to problem solve.

- Ensure follow up of policy and procedures.
- Follow agency procedures for schedules, hours of work, breaks, and time sheets, including: shift changes, sick time, overtime, days off and vacation leave.
- Ensure positive relationships with families, friends, professionals, business, community, advocates and the public at large.
- Help extend a warm welcome to visitors and hosts.
- Portray a positive image of individuals and agency.
- Speak professionally when answering the phone and in other interactions.
- Dress in a clean and appropriate manner.
- Ensure confidentiality is maintained.
- Maintain and respect confidentiality in sharing information about individuals, co workers and organization at all times.
