2025/2026, Spring Term, Course-Based Opportunity – Department of Native Studies
The Department of Native Studies is seeking qualified Contract Academic Staff (CAS) to teach the following course at the Brandon University Campus in the 2026 Spring Session in the First Term. The course will run based on sufficient enrollment and budgetary approval.
Qualifications: Applicants must hold a Master’s degree, and those holding a Ph.D. or who are at the ABD stage may be preferred. Applicants may seek to establish an experiential/traditional equivalency to the Master’s and are invited to contact the Chair of the Selection Committee on how to establish equivalent academic or professional credentials.
Salary: $7,857.00 per 3 credit hour course.

Spring Session, Term 1 (May 4 – May 25):
68:151 INTRODUCTION TO NATIVE STUDIES I (3) – slot A (Mon-Thurs 9:00am – 12:00pm)
This introductory course is designed to acquaint the student with the area of Native Studies. This course explores the relationship between First Nations/Métis and the Canadian State, particularly the late 19th century to contemporary times. Weekly topics will include Colonialism; Identity & Labels; Indian Act & the Indian Department; Demographics; Métis; Treaties; Indigenous & Treaty Rights; Self Government & Self-
Determination; Education; Child Welfare; Health; and Justice. Each lecture will begin with a historical discussion and work up to present today.
Once completed students will understand:
- how colonialism affected First Nations and Métis Peoples in Canada.
- the relationship between First Nations and Métis Peoples and the Canadian government.
- the relationships between First Nations and Métis Peoples and Canadian Society.
- how history continues to impact First Nations and Métis Peoples today.
