30.251 Gods, War, and Love: Greek Poetry in Translation

Ancient Greek poetry marks the beginnings of the Western literary tradition. From epics lamenting the tragic consequences of war and violence to lyrics celebrating the joy of a good life, it is all to be found in the works of the ancient Greeks. Authors and works to be studied may include Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey, Apollonius of Rhodes’s Argonautica, Hesiod’s Works and Days and Theogony, and representative selections from Hellenic and Hellenistic poets. Texts are all in English: no knowledge of Greek is required.

Prerequisite: 6 credit hours in first-year English literature or permission of instructor.
