Kierstin Fey

2021 International Women's Day Nominee - Kierstin Fey

Give a brief bio about yourself/ your background/ your history.

I was born and raised in Selkirk Manitoba and grew up fully immersed in sports. I played everything but had a passion for volleyball. I was recruited out of high school to play on the women’s volleyball team at Memorial University. I decided to pursue a Physical Education degree because of my love for sports and activity. This combined with my coaching experiences lead me into the field of teaching. I plan to continue coaching and I want to pass down my passion for health, wellness, and activity on to my students and athletes.

What education have you taken?

I have completed my Bachelor of Physical Education at the Memorial University of Newfoundland. I am currently in my last year of my Bachelor of Education degree.

What accomplishments are you proud of?

I am proud of being named an Academic All-Canadian, as well as being placed on the Dean’s Honour List. I am also proud of being named to the Usports Women’s Volleyball All-rookie team.

How did you become interested in your field of study?

Growing up I was lucky enough to have many great role models in my life, most of them were my coaches and teachers. My early years Physical Education teacher instilled a love for activity in me from a young age, which I believe has greatly contributed to my success in life. Sports kept me highly involved in school and extremely motivated. I have learned the true benefits of physical activity on not only my physical health but my mental health as well. My goal is to help students to understand the true benefits of physical activity and help them to find ways to remain active for life.

What is your philosophy in life?

My philosophy in life is to always try your best even when no one is watching.

Where do you see yourself in the future?

My goal is to be a teacher, hopefully teaching English or Physical Education. Wherever I end up I hope I can have a positive impact on that school and my students. In the future I also see myself as a coach giving back the opportunities that I was so fortunate to have growing up as a student and athlete.

What do you #ChooseToChallenge?

I #ChooseToChallenge gender inequity in sports.

Nominator’s Comments:

Kierstin,is a member of the Women’s Volleyball team. In 2019 she injured her knee which would end her season. Instead of feeling down Kierstin went to work rehabbing and was an inspiration to the rest of the team. Kierstin also attended every practice and matches leading as best she could from the bench. Kierstin also volunteered at our Fall Recreation Leagues as an organizer. This year she was chosen to be a Captain on the team but unfortunately, the season was cancelled because of COVID-19. She is still participating in all team functions and mentoring our younger athletes. Kierstin graduated from Education at the end of this semester and her impact at BU will be missed.
