Curriculum & Pedagogy

The courses in the department of Curriculum and Pedagogy are oriented to deepening learning as part of an informed teaching practice.  It is designed for those who wish to advance their own pedagogical thinking in a subject area, taking as its premise that understanding of subjects through disciplined inquiry leads to new interpretations of the practice of teaching. Teaching is inherently responsive. It requires both a continued deepening of understanding of an area of study and a self-reflexive approach to one’s own teaching practice and identity. As a department, we aim to introduce this process in the undergraduate program. In the graduate program, the process is further developed as teaching experience and theoretical acuity increase.

Educational Psychology and Student Services

The department of Educational Psychology and Student Services consists of 2 entities within one department. The first entity focuses on inclusive education. The courses are oriented to deepen learning of human development and inform inclusive practice within schools, including evaluation and assessment at the classroom level. Inclusive educational practices provide a critical examination on the Manitoba context, including the Public Schools Amendment Act (Appropriate Education Programming), and the concepts of exceptionalities, disabilities, and learner differences. Instruction about how to deploy a universal design for instruction, adaptation, modifications, and the provision of assistive technology is also addressed. The second entity focuses on counselling in schools. Courses are oriented to support classroom teachers in developing and enhancing interpersonal skills for intervening with students with troubles. An overarching perspective of social justice education that examines intersecting oppressions, the development of anti-oppressive education and social justice pedagogies is a guiding principle of the department. The undergraduate courses prepare pre-service teachers as they begin careers as general classroom educators, and the graduate program further develops their teaching experience for those who wish to focus more specifically in inclusive education or school counselling.
