Scholarships and Bursaries

NEW** THE GENDER & WOMEN’S STUDIES BURSARY

To be awarded to a continuing student on the basis of financial need and program recommendation. Preference will be given to a student in a Major or Minor program in Gender & Women’s Studies (GWS) who self-identifies as 2SLGBTQIA+. In the absence of an eligible candidate, preference will then be given to a student in a Major or Minor program in Gender & Women’s Studies who has demonstrated commitment to social justice and/or social change (letteroutlining the student’s activities in this area required). In the absence of an eligible candidate, the award may then be granted, upon the recommendation of the Gender & Women’s Studies Program, as an award with no financial needcomponent to a student in a Gender and Women’s Studies Major or Minor, based on GPA.

Centennial Scholarship for Women’s Studies

To be award upon the recommendation of the Coordinator of Gender and Women’s Studies to the student with the highest standing in the Gender and Women’s Studies major or minor degree program. Normally, the recipient will have completed at least 6 credit hours in this area and have obtained a GPA of no less than 3.5. Under normal circumstances, a student may receive this award only once.

Sheila Kingham Memorial Scholarship in Gender and Women’s Studies

To be awarded on the recommendation of the Gender and Women’s Studies program to a student who combines strong academic achievement with a commitment to the women’s movement in the Brandon region. This award may be divided.

Claren Turner Scholarship in Gender and Women’s Studies

To be awarded on the recommendation of the Gender and Women’s Studies program to the student with the best academic performance in any one of the following courses (or their equivalents) in this ranked order of preference: 36/54:497 History of Sexuality in Canada, 36/90:355 The Sociology of Sexuality, 36/90:267 Sociology of Intimacy and Marriage, or 36/82:280 Human Sexuality. This scholarship shall only be awarded to students who are not receiving, nor will receive any other scholarships totally more than $2,500 in the same award year. Recipients may only receive this scholarship once.

Margaret Laurence Scholarship in Gender and Women’s Studies

Provided by the Gender and Women’s Studies program. To be awarded to the best student in either 36.161 Introduction to Women’s Studies: Issues in Feminism or 36.162 Introduction to Women’s Studies: Contemporary Issues in Gender, or their equivalent.

Lorelei Cederstrom Scholarship in Gender and Women’s Studies

To be awarded on the basis of academic achievement to the best student in either 36.253 Gender in Transnational Perspective, 36.254 Transnationalism and Women’s Lived Experiences, or 36.366 Critical Readings in Gender, or their equivalent.

Guru Tegh Bahadur Scholarship for Human Rights

To be awarded by departmental recommendation in alternating years to: 1) a student with a declared Major/Minor in Sociology who has demonstrated an interest in Human Rights issues through high academic performance in at least two of the following courses (or the equivalents): 90:156 Introduction to Crime and Community, 90:264 Police Organization in a Democratic Society, 90:281 Race and Racism, 90:350 Transnational Social Change, 90:353 Women in the Criminal Justice System, 90:369 Reproductive Justice, 90:445 Sex and the State, 90:487 Critical Sociology. 2) a student with a declared Major/Minor in Gender & Women’s Studies who has demonstrated an interest in Human Rights issues through high academic performance in at least two of the following courses (or the equivalents): 36:162 Making Sense of Gender, 36:253 Gender in Transitional Perspectives, 36:255 Sex, Gender, Popular Culture, 36:268 Understanding Feminism, 36:366 Critical Readings in Gender, 36:367 Women in Twentieth-Century Revolutions, 36:375 Women in Global South since 1700, 36:457 A History of International Women’s Movements, 36:458 Gender, War and Peace.
