Stress Less for Exam Success
The stretch leading up to and during exams is a busy and stressful time for students. Here is a collection of tips to help get you organized and ready.
1. Preparation Reduces Stress
Organization and planning builds confidence and prevents last-minute stress.
- Make note of the exact time and location of your exam.
- Ask your professor for help on concepts you are unsure of.
- Prepare materials the evening before.
- Use planners or calendars to schedule study blocks and breaks.
- Set realistic goals.
2. Healthy Routines Support Academic Success
Healthy habits directly affect cognitive performance.
- Aim for eight hours of sleep each night, turn off screens 30 minutes before bed, and establish a relaxing nighttime routine.
- Eat balanced meals, drink plenty of water, and pack healthy snacks for when you are on the go.
3. Breaks & Balance Improve Focus
Step away during studying to reset focus and productivity.
- Take short study breaks, aiming for 5-10 minutes about once an hour.
- Move your body. Go for a walk, try yoga, or take a fitness class.
- Try mindfulness practices like deep breathing or grounding exercises when you are feeling overwhelmed.
4. Positive Mindset & Self-Compassion
Be kind to yourself and reduce self-imposed pressure.
- Focus on progress, not perfection.
- Celebrate wins, big or small.
- Practice positive self-talk.
5. Social Support is Important
Stay connected to supportive people during stressful periods.
- Reach out to family, friends, and campus resources if you need to talk or get help.
6. A Healthy Perspective Post-Exam
Reset and move forward after the exam.
- Avoid overanalyzing every question, as you can’t change the result now.
- Focus on what went well.
- Do something to celebrate all your hard work.
