I graduated from Brandon University in 2019 with a BSc (Hons.) and in 2023 with a MSc focused on geochemistry and mineral exploration. Growing up in Brandon, BU was the obvious choice to start my academic career. The less obvious choice, what I wanted to study. I spent much of my youth in the outdoors and knew I wanted a career that didn’t bind me to the confines of a desk. Thankfully, I found geology. The BU geology department would prove to be one of the best: great professors with diverse backgrounds, small class sizes, and advanced analytical instruments. As well, the small class sizes in conjunction with good department funding gives every student the opportunity for intradepartmental scholarships and conference subsidies. Travelling to conferences with fellow students and attending SIFT, a two-week geological field trip throughout the Rockies, are memories that will last a lifetime. Doing a master’s at BU was invaluable. I gained industry experience through a sponsored partnership while academically collaborating with international researchers. Throughout my early geological career, I have been fortunate to work in the prairie oil and gas industry, the uranium industry across northern Saskatchewan, and at the edge of the Arctic Circle conducting diamond exploration. If you are searching for a diverse and exciting career that can take you across the world, I can’t recommend BU’s geology program enough.
