My BU Experience

My journey at Brandon University has been transformative, fueling a passion for biology and research that began as a curiosity in high school. This interest deepened after enrolling in a Cancer Cell Biology course taught by Dr. Mousumi Majumder, which led me to join her breast cancer research lab. Engaging in cutting-edge research in the Breast Cancer Cell and Molecular Research Facility gave me purpose, direction, and a commitment to a career in health research. Beyond the classroom, my university experience was enriched by hands-on involvement, such as serving as a teaching assistant in biology and physics labs, where I shared my knowledge with fellow students. The university’s encouragement of active participation also allowed me to attend national research conferences, presenting my research, learning from others, and connecting with established researchers across Canada. This environment of mentorship, access to advanced facilities, and a culture of engagement has solidified my commitment to research. As I advance through my master’s program, I am deeply grateful for Brandon University’s support, which has provided me with invaluable opportunities to grow and contribute to the scientific community.

Learning at BU

During my time at Brandon University, I've grown in ways I hadn’t expected, both academically and personally. I initially chose BU for the chance to play USPORTS volleyball, but I was also drawn to the smaller class sizes and the chance to build real connections with faculty—both of which have been invaluable. While I started out with dreams of becoming a doctor, joining Dr. Majumder’s breast cancer research team changed my path. Working in her lab opened my eyes to the potential of research, and I found myself drawn to the challenges and rewards of studying biology. Researching breast cancer biology has given me hands-on lab skills and a deeper understanding of molecular biology. I’ve also developed communication and leadership skills by working as a teaching assistant in biology and physics labs. With everything I’ve learned, I’m ready and excited to take the next steps in my career and contribute to the research field.

Extracurricular

Assistant Coach BU Men’s Volleyball; After completing my eligibility as a player I wanted to stay involved and give back to the program that gave so much to me. Graduate Teaching Assistant; To sharpen my skills as an instructor.

Awards and Accolades

I have received a few scholarships and bursaries throughout my studies. This has impacted my experience in a very positive way. Having financial support is huge when it comes to stress management and focusing on education and other factors that improve the university experience. This support allowed me to focus on other extracurricular activities that support the university, instead of stressing about how I will manage to pay tuition. I don’t think I would’ve had such a positive experience, nor be as involved in university activities without the financial support I received over my years at BU.

BU Memories

A few of my fondest memories include competing on the Bobcat Mens volleyball team. This brought me closer to the community here in Brandon and my time with the team ended with us winning a Conference championship and a National silver medal. Another fond memory is travelling to Halifax, NS to attend the Canadian Cancer Research Conference. It was an amazing experience being able to meet cancer research celebrities and get to hear them speak about their research. I also had the opportunity to share my own research and that was fulfilling as I near the completion of my research here at BU and after all the work we have done it was nice to share it on a larger scale.
