Biography

Andrea Thomson is proud to be a Registered Psychiatric Nurse. Andrea has psychiatric nursing experience in a variety of areas including an acute care nurse, nurse educator, and mental health counsellor. Andrea is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatric Nursing, Faculty of Health Studies, Brandon University. Andrea actively engages in research regarding the care of mental health clients and psychiatric nursing education.

Research Interests

Andrea typically subscribes to qualitative research methods such as phenomenology, narrative inquiry, and interpretative description. Areas of research interest include acute care psychiatric nursing practices and recovery-oriented mental health care provision. In addition, Andrea’s research has focused on undergraduate education such as teaching strategies to foster critical thinking. Andrea is currently building a research program focused on nurses and psychiatric nurses who experience disabilities, accessibility, and accommodations. This research program also examines educational practices to support nursing and psychiatric nursing students who experience disabilities.
